The rank-based land system was established by the Ayutthaya Dynasty in Thailand. King Boromatorai Lokanat (reigned 1448-88) codified the custom of granting land to individuals according to their status. The highest of the seven classes of nobility, Chaofah, was given 30,000 rai (1 rai is 1,600 m2 ) of land, and the amount of land was reduced according to rank, with commoners given 15 rai. The amount of fines and compensation varied according to the sakdinha, which indicated each person's social status. In the second half of the 19th century, after the wage and salary system was established, sakdinha was merely used to indicate status, and was abolished during the democratic revolution of 1932.
