Fuzanbou Co., Ltd. - Fuzanbou
A publishing company founded in 1886 in Jinbocho, Kanda, Tokyo, by Sakamoto Kajima. From the beginning, it was known for its large-scale publications of high quality, and marked an era with its large-format dictionaries. It began by buying and selling used books and acting as an intermediary for Western books, but on the side it also published Amano Tameyuki's Principles of Economics (1886), which was well-received for its easy-to-read nature. It was followed by Amano Tameyuki's History of the World and Maebashi Takayoshi's Geography of Japan, which were adopted as secondary school textbooks and became pioneers in the field. On the other hand, the company devoted itself to dictionaries, including Yoshida Togo's Great Japanese Place Name Dictionary, seven volumes (1900-07), and Haga Yaichi and Shimoda Jiro's Japanese Home Encyclopedia, two volumes (1906).It also achieved success with such works as the Great Japanese Language Dictionary, five volumes (1915-28) co-authored by Ueda Mannen and Matsui Kanji, the Great Genkai, five volumes (1932-37) by Otsuki Fumihiko, and the National Encyclopedia, 12 volumes (1934-37), solidifying its reputation as a dictionary publisher.
