August Wilhelm Iffland

German actor and playwright. Born in Hanover. After a traveling troupe, he was discovered by Eckhof in 1777 and performed at the Gotha Court Theater. In 1779 he moved to the newly established National Theater in Mannheim, where he achieved success in the role of Franz Mohr in the premiere of Schiller's The Robbers (1782). In 1896 he became director of the National Theater in Berlin, and in 1811 he became general director of the Royal Theater. He excelled in comedy, and was particularly adept at playing generous father roles in citizen plays. He wrote over 60 plays, making him a more popular writer than Schiller. He also wrote treatises on acting technique.

ドイツの俳優、劇作家。ハノーバーに生まれる。旅回り一座ののち、1777年エクホーフにみいだされゴータ宮廷劇場に出演、79年には新設のマンハイム国民劇場に移り、シラーの『群盗』初演（1782）におけるフランツ・モール役で成功を収めた。96年ベルリン国民劇場監督、1811年王立劇場総監督に就任。喜劇をよくし、ことに市民劇の寛大な父親役を得意とした。60編を超える戯曲があり、シラーをしのぐ人気作家でもあった。演技術の論稿もある。
