The majority of the population is concentrated in the Niger River basin in the west and in the Sahel region in the south. The most populous tribes are the Hausa (54%), Songhai and the related Djerma (23%), Fulbe (Fulani, Pool) (10%), and Tuareg (3%). 85% of the population are Muslim, and most of the rest practice traditional religions unique to their tribes.
