Abraham Trembley

Swiss zoologist. He studied in Geneva and then moved to the Netherlands to continue his research. His talent for teaching was recognized and he became a tutor to the son of an aristocrat, and when the son reached adulthood he was given a generous pension and returned to Switzerland. He wrote many books on education, politics, religion, and other subjects, but he is also famous for his experiments with regeneration of hydras. His discovery that an adult hydra could be regenerated from each part even if it was cut into pieces was regarded as strong evidence in support of the epigenetic theory in the debate over embryology at the time.

スイスの動物学者。ジュネーブで学び，オランダに移り，研究を進めた。教育の才能をみこまれて貴族の息子の家庭教師となり，その成人後に十分な退職金をもらい，スイスにもどった。彼は教育，政治，宗教などに関する著作を多く書いているが，ヒドラの再生実験を行ったことで有名である。一匹のヒドラを切り離してばらばらにしても，それぞれの部分から再び成体が形成される事実の発見は，当時の発生学論争において，後成説を支持する有力な証拠とみなされた。
