1710‐84 Swiss zoologist. He studied in Geneva and then moved to the Netherlands to continue his research. His talent for teaching was recognized and he became a tutor to the son of an aristocrat, and when the son reached adulthood he was given a generous pension and returned to Switzerland. He wrote many books on education, politics, religion, and other subjects, but he is also famous for his experiments with regeneration of hydras. His discovery that an adult hydra could be regenerated from each part even if it was cut into pieces was regarded as strong evidence in support of the epigenetic theory in the debate over embryology at the time.
