History of the Song Dynasty

A chronicle-style history book about the Song Dynasty in China. One of the official histories. It consists of 47 volumes of the 16 Main Chronicles, 162 volumes of the 15 Records, 32 volumes of the Two Tables, and 255 volumes of the 197 Biographies. It was compiled by order of Tutuo and others. It was completed in 1345 by adding other materials to the national history, annals, and daily calendar of the Song Dynasty collected by the Yuan Dynasty after the fall of the Southern Song Dynasty. Some of the historical materials on which it was based were lost, insufficient as materials, or missing materials were filled in with other materials, and some were deleted, so it cannot be said to be complete. Therefore, it is inferior in some ways to, for example, the Song Huiyao, the Zou Zizhi Tongjian Longpen, and the Jianyan Since Jiannian Yaolu, but it is valuable as a comprehensive historical material of the Song Dynasty that includes things that are not included in those materials. This tendency is particularly strong in the Southern Song section, which lacks basic historical materials. The Hyaku-no-bon edition, which is based on the Yuan Dynasty edition, is excellent.

中国、宋を扱った紀伝体の歴史書。正史の一つ。16本紀47巻、15志162巻、二表32巻、197列伝255巻からなる。脱脱(ツクタ)らによる奉勅撰(ほうちょくせん)。南宋の滅亡後に元が収集した宋の国史、実録、日暦などをもとに他の資料を加えて1345年に完成した。基礎になった史料のなかには、散逸したもの、資料として不十分なもの、欠けていたのを他の資料で補ったものなどがあり、しかもこれらを削除したりして、十分なできとはいいがたい面がある。したがって、たとえば『宋会要』『続資治通鑑(ぞくしじつがん)長編』『建炎以来繋年(けいねん)要録』などに比べると劣る面があるが、これらにないものも含んだ宋代の集約的な史料として価値は高い。とりわけ基本的史料を欠く南宋部分にこの傾向が強い。版本は元の至正刊本をもとにする百衲本(ひゃくのうぼん)が優れている。
