A family of hereditary Noh mask makers from the early modern period. The school was founded by Kazusa no Suke Chikanobu, a disciple of Sankobo, and originally lived in Sakata Kita-gun, Goshu (present-day Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture), where they took the name Iseki. The head mask of the chief priest at Tosa Shrine in Kochi is inscribed with the name Iseki by Chikanobu in 1528. Works by the second Jirozaemon and the third Bitchu no Jo have the inscription Iseki on the back of the mask, so this school was also known as Katakana Iseki. The fourth, Kawachi Ieshige (died 1645), was active in Edo and was highly valued by the Shogunate and other feudal lords. He was known as the best in the world, and his coloring was so unique that it was called Kawachi coloring. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
