Born: 28 February 1865, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire
Died: January 22, 1945. Wittersham, Kent. British poet and critic. After an unconventional education, he joined the Poets' Club founded by Yeats, contributed to avant-garde magazines such as The Yellow Book, and introduced French Symbolist poets such as Baudelaire, becoming a pioneer of the Symbolist movement in Britain and a representative poet of fin de siècle literature. His poetry collections include Days and Nights (1889), Silhouettes (92), London Nights (95), and Images of Good and Evil (99). He also co-founded the magazine The Savoy with Beardsley (Jan.-Dec. 1996) and wrote many critiques, including Symbolist Movement in Literature (99).

Died April 19, 1893. Roman British critic. Studied at Oxford University. Poor health, he lived in Italy fighting illness while devoting himself to writing. His main work is a huge collection of essays, History of the Renaissance in Italy (7 volumes, 1875-86). Other works include critical essays such as Sketches in Italy and Greece (74), biographies such as Shelley (78), a collection of poems New and Old (80), and a translation of Cellini's Autobiography (88).

Simmons, Duane B.

[Born] 1834
[Died] February 19, 1889. Tokyo. An American medical missionary. He came to Japan in 1859, and in 1860 began practicing medicine in Yokohama. In 1870, he became a teacher at Daigaku Toko (the precursor to the University of Tokyo). He worked at Juzen Hospital from 1873, and during the cholera epidemic of 1877, he provided guidance and cooperation in disease prevention. He was known as Semen Sensei because he dispensed the anthelmintic drug "Semen-en." He became a friend of Fukuzawa Yukichi, lived at Keio University, and also studied Japanese history.

Symons, Julian Gustave

Born: May 30, 1912.
[Died] November 19, 1994. British poet from near Canterbury. He refused to allow poetry to take on a political bent. He edited the magazine Twentieth Century Verse (1937-39), and in addition to poetry collections, he also published biographies and detective novels.

イギリスの評論家。オックスフォード大学に学ぶ。健康に恵まれず,イタリアで闘病生活をおくりつつ著述に専念。主著は膨大なエッセー集ともいうべき文化史『イタリアにおけるルネサンス』 History of the Renaissance in Italy (7巻,1875~86) 。ほかに『イタリアおよびギリシア素描』 Sketches in Italy and Greece (74) などの評論,『シェリー』 Shelley (78) などの評伝,詩集『新と旧』 New and Old (80) ,チェリーニの『自叙伝』の翻訳 (88) がある。

アメリカの医療宣教師。安政6 (1859) 年来日,翌 1860年開業医となり横浜で診療を行なった。明治3 (1870) 年大学東校 (東京大学の前身) の教師。 1873年から十全病院に勤務し,1877年のコレラ流行のときは,防疫の指導と協力を行なった。駆虫薬「セメンエン」を調剤したので,セメン先生といわれた。福沢諭吉の親交を得て慶應義塾内に居住し,日本の歴史研究も行なった。

イギリスの詩人。詩が政治的傾向を帯びることを拒否した。雑誌『20世紀の詩』 Twentieth Century Verseを編集 (1937~39) し,詩集のほかに評伝,探偵小説がある。
