In the Middle Ages, Sarugaku was based in Tamba. The most important Tamba Sarugaku troupes were Yada Sarugaku, based in what is now Kameoka, Kyoto Prefecture, Umewaka Sarugaku in Oshima, Ayabe City, and Hiyoshi Sarugaku, whose base is unknown. Yada Sarugaku is an old troupe that has been called the honza since the Kamakura period, and it made regular appearances at events such as the Shussui-e at Hossho-ji Temple in Kyoto, the Mishiro Festival at Kamo Shrine, and the rice planting ritual at Sumiyoshi Shrine, along with the Enami-za (Niiza) and Hojoji-za troupes in Settsu. It also held the position of gakuto (head of the group) at Gokomiya Shrine in Fushimi from a fairly early period until 1437 (Eikyo 9), providing Sarugaku services at the spring and autumn rituals.
