National Road

…the road was built by the federal government to connect the eastern Atlantic coast with the western United States during the early stages of the American Westward Expansion. It is also called the National Road. In 1806, it was decided to build it from Cumberland, Maryland to Wheeling (then in Virginia, now in West Virginia) on the Ohio River, and it was completed in 1818.
