Year of death: June 9, 1907 Year of birth: Tempo 4.12.28 (1834.2.6) He was the longest serving follower and leader of Tenrikyo and was called "Honseki." He was born in Uda, Yamato Province (Uda District, Nara Prefecture) as the fourth son of Iiburi Bun'emon and Rei. He began training as a carpenter at the age of 14, and by the age of 22, he was working as a carpenter in Ichinomoto Village, Soegami District (Ichinomoto Town, Tenri City). In Bunkyu 1 (1861), at the age of 29, he married Kurosaki Sato. In Genji 1 (1864), when his wife fell ill after a miscarriage, he visited Nakayama Miki, the founder of Tenrikyo, who was known at the time as a living god. After his wife recovered from her illness, Izo was impressed by her spiritual power and converted to the religion by following her teachings. As a token of gratitude, Izo, who was a carpenter, built a "service place" as the first place of worship. He visited the founder frequently and became his most trusted follower. He was given the gift of a fan and a gohei, and was allowed to see the divine will from the movement of the fan and gohei (sacred offering). In 1875, he was also granted the right to convey the divine word to those who prayed. In 1882, he quit his job as a carpenter and moved with his entire family to live with the founder, where he assisted him and devoted himself to faith and evangelism. In 1897, one month after the death of the founder, the Parent God descended upon him and he became the "honseki" (head of the throne), the one who conveyed the Parent God's words, "Osashizu." The position of Honseki was based on the "Osashizu," which means that he was the same as the founder, and Izo established leadership, set out guidelines for the organization's management, and built the foundations of Tenrikyo by following the founder's teachings. <References> "Osashizu," Ueda Eizo, "Ningen Honseki-sama" (Kunimitsu Kawamura) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
