Phrynichos

Phrynichos
A Greek comic playwright of the 5th century BC. He is often mentioned as a rival of Aristophanes, but only fragments of his works have been handed down. The protagonist of Monotropos is an extreme misanthrope, and his characterization may have been a precursor to the New Comedy of Menander and others. Kōmastai (The Guests at a Revel) deals with the incident involving Alcibiades and others in 415 BC, and it is a pity that it is not passed down today. In Mūsai (The Muses), shortly after Sophocles' death in 406 BC, the muses appear as a chorus, mourning the death of the great tragedian. Didymus, a great scholar of the Roman Empire, is said to have written a commentary on it, but this has also not been handed down.
