Sankichi Sakata
1870-1946 A shogi player from the Meiji to early Showa period.
Born June 3, 1870. Self-taught, he reached the rank of 8th dan in 1915. In 1921, he called himself Meijin, and was in conflict with the central Go world for about 16 years. After his death, he was awarded the titles of Meijin and Osho. He was based in Kansai throughout his life, and stories of his matches with 8th dan Sekine Kinjiro and his wife Koyu (who is called Koharu in Hojo Hideji's play "Osho") have become famous in films, plays, and popular songs. He passed away on July 23, 1946. He was 77 years old. He was from Osaka. Also known as Sakata.

明治3年6月3日生まれ。独学で大正4年8段となる。14年名人を自称し,約16年間中央棋界と対立。死後,名人・王将位をおくられた。生涯,関西を本拠とし,関根金次郎8段との対局や妻こゆう(北条秀司(ひでじ)の戯曲「王将」では小春)とのエピソードは映画,演劇,歌謡曲などで有名。昭和21年7月23日死去。77歳。大阪出身。阪田とも。
