Born June 3, 1870. Self-taught, he reached the rank of 8th dan in 1915. In 1921, he called himself Meijin, and was in conflict with the central Go world for about 16 years. After his death, he was awarded the titles of Meijin and Osho. He was based in Kansai throughout his life, and stories of his matches with 8th dan Sekine Kinjiro and his wife Koyu (who is called Koharu in Hojo Hideji's play "Osho") have become famous in films, plays, and popular songs.
