Amanyu - Amanyu

A large perennial herb of the Umbelliferae family (APG classification: Umbelliferae), which can reach a height of 2 meters. It grows in mountain grasslands. The leaves are compound, 1-2 times trifoliate, thin and hairless. The leaflets are large and broadly ovate, further divided into three, with sawtooth. The base of the petiole swells into a sheath. The flowers are white in number and appear in large compound umbels up to 20 cm in diameter in August. There are thin small bracts at the base of the pedicel. The fruit is elliptical, about 7 mm in diameter, with narrow wings on both sides. It is distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu (northern from the Chubu region and Mt. Daisen in Tottori Prefecture), and Shikoku (Mt. Ishizuchi). The stems are sweet and edible. Its name is "ama-nyu", and "nyu" is an Ainu word. The angelica tree is similar to this species, but differs in that it has hairy leaves and does not have bracts at the base of the stalk.

セリ科（APG分類：セリ科）の大形多年草で、高さ2メートルにも達する。山地の草原に生える。葉は1～2回3出羽状複葉、質が薄く毛がない。小葉は大きく広卵形でさらに三つに切れ込み、鋸歯(きょし)がある。葉柄の基部は膨れて鞘(さや)状となる。花は8月、径20センチメートルに達する大形の複散形花序に多数つき、白色。花柄の基部に細い小総包葉がある。果実は楕円(だえん)形で約7ミリメートル、左右に狭い翼がある。北海道、本州（中部地方以北と鳥取県大山(だいせん)）、四国（石鎚(いしづち)山）に分布。茎は甘く食用となる。名は「甘ニュウ」であり、「ニュウ」はアイヌ語という。シシウドは本種に似るが、葉に毛が生えること、花柄の基部に小総包葉がないことで異なる。
