Nayotake

Japanese:
Nayotake

A play by Kato Michio. Five acts and nine scenes. It was published in Mita Bungaku from May to November 1946 (Showa 21). In June 1951, the Onoe Kikugoro Theatre Company performed a part of it as Nayotake Sho. In October 1980, the Bungakuza Theatre Company premiered it under the direction of Akutagawa Hiroshi. In the mid-Heian period, Isonokami Fumimaro sees off his father who is driven out of the capital by the wicked schemes of Dainagon Otomo no Miyuki. He falls in love with Nayotake, the daughter of the Bamboo Cutter. When Fumimaro finds out that the Dainagon is in love with Nayotake, he tries to clear his father's name. On the day of the Aoi Festival, Fumimaro goes crazy and complains to the crowd about the Dainagon's cruelty, but the Dainagon's skillful oratory only earns him the ridicule of the crowd. Eventually, in a fantasy, Fumimaro and Nayotake unite, but Nayotake tells him that a messenger from the moon is coming and dies in Fumimaro's arms. Fumimaro departs for the eastern provinces where his father lives. Said to have been inspired by Giraudoux's "Ondine," this masterpiece of modern verse drama depicts the trajectory of the suffering of youth during wartime in elegant modern language with a Japanese context. The author wrote this play in five months as a will, and entrusted it to a friend before leaving for the front.
