Itoigawa [city] - Itoigawa

Japanese: 糸魚川[市] - いといがわ
Itoigawa [city] - Itoigawa
A city in the southwest of Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It is a geologically important area where the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line, which is on the western edge of the Fossa Magna, runs through the valley of the Himekawa River. The central city area on the Japan Coast developed as a post town and castle town where the Hokuriku Kaido (National Route 8) and Matsumoto Kaido (National Route 148) diverge. It is still a transportation hub where the Hokuriku Shinkansen, Echigo Tokimeki Railway, and Hokuriku Expressway pass through, and where the Oito Line branches off. The mountainous area of the Himekawa River basin, which occupies most of the city area, is rich in forest resources, limestone, jade, etc., and in addition to ceramics, mainly cement, precision equipment and electrical equipment industries are also thriving. The southern part belongs to the Chubu Sangaku National Park, and there is the Hakuba Mountains Alpine Plant Zone (a special natural monument). The mountainous area approaches the sea, and in the west, the cliffs of Oyashirazu form. In March 2005, the towns of Aomi and Nou in Nishikubiki County were incorporated into the city. The city sustained damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. Area: 746.24 km2 . Population: 47,702 (2010).
