The capital of the state of Valle del Cauca in western Colombia. It is located about 300 km southwest of the capital Bogotá, overlooking the Cali River, a tributary of the upper reaches of the Cauca River, which separates the Western and Central Andes mountains. It is at an altitude of about 1000 m. It was built in 1536. It is located in the Cauca Valley, one of the most fertile agricultural regions in the country, but its location in the mountains with poor transportation access slowed its economic development. It began to develop after the railway was built in the 20th century, and the population has increased rapidly since the 1950s, becoming the third largest city in the country after Bogotá and Medellin. Since 1954, the Cauca Valley Development Authority has implemented a comprehensive development plan, and the city is the center of the Cauca Valley, where agricultural, commercial and industrial development has progressed. The city distributes coffee, sugarcane, cotton, beans, beef and other products, and is one of the leading industrial centers in the country, with textile, food, shoe, paper, pharmaceutical, bicycle, tire and soap industries. The city is the cultural center of the Cauca Valley, with higher education institutions such as the University of Baye (1945) and the University of Santiago de Cali (1958), theaters and museums. It is also a transportation hub, with the main railway and the Pan-American Highway passing through it, and it is a junction of railways and roads leading to Buenaventura, the main port on the Pacific coast of the country. There is also an international airport. Population: 1,402,983 (1985). Cali |
