Nicolas de Largillière

Nicolas de Largillière

French painter. Born in Paris, he died there. He lived in Antwerp from an early age and entered the workshop of Antoine Goubeaud, becoming independent in 1672. He then went to London and worked under the Dutch painter Peter Lely, before returning to France in 1682. He entered the Academie in 1684 and submitted "Portrait of Charles Lebrun" (Louvre Museum) as his graduation project in 1686, becoming an Academician. His portraits use stable compositions in the style of Van Dyck, but also show the influence of Rembrandt in the subtle contrasts of light and dark and the wonderful expression of the texture of the clothing. This style was established in the 1700s and was particularly beloved by the bourgeoisie of the time.

His representative portraits include "The Beautiful Young Girl of Strasbourg" (1703, Strasbourg Museum of Fine Arts). He also produced a monumental dedication painting, "Justices of the City of Paris Standing before Saint Geneviève" (1699, currently in the possession of the Church of Saint-Étienne-Dumont), commissioned by the city of Paris. In Japan, his "Portrait of a Young Nobleman" (c. 1714) is housed at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo.
