A city in north-central Hokkaido. Established as a city in 1956. It is the central city of the Nayoro Basin and is on the Soya Main Line. It produces glutinous rice, potatoes, and sugar beets, and is also a dairy farm. There are factories that make dairy products and pulp, mainly cardboard base paper. It is home to one of five medicinal plant cultivation test stations in the country, where about 200 species are experimentally cultivated.
