The largest Protestant denomination. Also called the Lutheran Church, or Lutherische Kirche in German. An evangelical church that follows Luther's teachings, with approximately 70 million followers. In 1530, the Augsburg Confession was made public at the German Diet in Augsburg, and its existence in the German Empire was recognized by the Religious Peace of Augsburg in 1555. Its doctrinal foundation was established in 1580 with the establishment of the Creed of Peace and Association. Since then, in various parts of Germany and Northern Europe, it has developed in association with nations and princes, and has often maintained the status of a state religion. It was introduced to Japan from the United States in 1893, and the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded, as well as several other churches. The Lutheran World Federation (established in 1947, headquartered in Geneva) is the governing body.
