Julio Cortázar

Argentine novelist. Born in Brussels, Belgium, he worked as a French teacher after returning to the United States, but defected to Paris in 1951 and took up a position as a translator for UNESCO. He is well versed in French and English literature, and has translated many works by Gide and Poe. His representative works include "The End of Play" (1956), a collection of fantastic short stories that are in the tradition of Borges, "The Secret Weapon" (1959), "The Story of Cronopio and Fama" (1962), and "All Fire is Fire" (1966).

アルゼンチンの小説家。ベルギーのブリュッセル生れで，帰国後もフランス語の教師を務めたりしたが，1951年にパリに亡命，ユネスコの翻訳官の職に就く。フランス文学やイギリス文学に精通し，ジッドやポーなどの翻訳が多数ある。代表的な作品は，ボルヘスの系譜につながる幻想的な短編から成る《遊戯の終り》(1956)，《秘密の武器》(1959)，《クロノピオとファーマの物語》(1962)，《すべての火は火》(1966)。
