A tall palm tree native to Micronesia, usually growing near water in valleys. The trunk reaches a height of 20 m and a diameter of 60-90 cm, and the surface is rough, with the base of the petiole remaining. The leaves are pinnately lobed and about 3 m long. The pinnae are numerous, lanceolate, about 45 cm long, and pendulous. The base of the leaf sheath is coarse, with irregular linear projections on the outer surface like those seen in sago palms, and a few long thorns. The spadix emerges from the leaf axil and is 2-3 m long. The flowers are monoecious. The fruit is spherical, 5-9 cm in diameter, and the outer surface is covered with small shiny scales.
