Nagato Guard Officer

Japanese: 長門警固番役 - ながとけいごばんやく

The Kamakura Shogunate established this position as a guard post for the sea around Nagato (Yamaguchi Prefecture) in preparation for a Mongol invasion. On May 12, 1275 (Kenji 1), the Shogunate ordered the samurai of both Suo (Yamaguchi Prefecture) and Aki (Hiroshima Prefecture) to join the yorikinban, as the samurai of Nagato alone were insufficient. Eight days later, it also ordered the samurai of Bingo (Hiroshima Prefecture) to be mobilized, and instructed that the four provinces should join forces to guard the strategic areas (such as the Kanmon Straits) and to take on the defensive in the event of an invasion. In August of the following year, 1276, the Shogunate further decided to assign forces from Sanyo and Nankaido to guard the sea around Nagato Province, and instructed Takeda Nobutoki, the guardian of Aki Province, to urge the lords and samurai of the province and the residents of Honjo Province to take up the role.

鎌倉幕府がモンゴル襲来に備えて設置した長門(山口県)辺海の警備番役。1275年(建治1)5月12日，幕府は長門一円の御家人のみでは不足として周防(山口県)･安芸(広島県)両国の御家人にも寄合勤番を命じているが，さらにその8日後には備後(広島県)の御家人にも動員を令し，4ヵ国の結番で要害の地(関門海峡等)を警備し，襲来の際は防戦に当たるよう指令した。翌76年8月，幕府はさらに山陽･南海道勢をもって警備に当てることにし，安芸国守護武田信時にあてて，同国内の地頭御家人並びに本所一円地の住人らを促してその任に当たるべきことを指令している。
