The capital of the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic in the North Caucasus, southwest of Russia. It is located at the northern foot of the central Greater Caucasus Mountains, overlooking the Nalchik River, a branch of the Terek River. It was built as a Russian fortress in 1818. It developed after the Russian Revolution, and is currently home to industries such as metallurgy (molybdenum), machinery, chemicals, and food. It is the educational and cultural center of the republic, and is home to Kabardino-Balkaria University (1957), the Kabardino-Balkaria Institute, a local museum, and a theater. Located in the mineral springs of the North Caucasus, it is known as a health resort and also serves as a base for hiking and sightseeing in the Greater Caucasus. It is the terminus of a branch line that branches off from the main railway line connecting Rostov-on-Don and Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, and a highway runs through it. There is also an airport. Population: 240,950 (2010).
