...The total number is estimated by expanding the area if necessary. There are two methods for taking samples: direct observation at the site, such as frame sampling (a fixed area is selected and all individuals within the area are counted), line or strip surveys (a fixed line or a strip with a certain width is counted), and methods for collecting organisms in some way and estimating. The former includes surveys of large mammals by airplane (census) and photographic surveys of the deep sea floor, as well as visual counts of whales from boats and counts of salmon and trout migrating upriver or downriver through fishways.
