A slightly shrubby herb of the Acanthaceae family (APG classification: Acanthaceae). The stems grow in clumps, 30-50 cm tall. The leaves are lanceolate and 3-6 cm long. In autumn, pale purple flowers bloom in spikes at the ends of the branches. The corolla is funnel-shaped with five equal lobes at the end. There are four stamens, two of which are shorter. The capsule is oblong and contains four seeds. Native to China, it has naturalized in warm areas of Japan, but is also cultivated. The genus Isehanabi has many species, mainly in the tropical regions of Asia, and in Japan, bellflowers such as Suzumushisou and Ryukyuai grow wild.
