During the Edo period, the shogunate sent elder retainers to their related domains and the main domains to their branch domains to supervise and guide their administration. The most representative were the elder retainers of the Gosanke (three branches of the clan), including the Naruse clan (Owari Inuyama, 35,000 koku) and Takekoshi clan (Mino Imao, 30,000 koku) attached to the Owari clan, the Ando clan (Kii Tanabe, over 38,800 koku), the Mizuno clan (Kii Shingu, over 35,000 koku), and the Nakayama clan (Hitachi Matsuoka, 25,000 koku) attached to the Mito clan. They governed the clans for generations and were given special treatment. In the late early modern period, a book of military affairs entitled "Gosankekata Otsuke" was published. The shogunate also appointed elder retainers to the Gosankyo (Tayasu, Hitotsubashi, and Shimizu), but these were not hereditary retainers to the Gosankyo, but were temporary secondments of shogunate vassals.
