A technique in the creation of Kabuki scripts. It is also called "Kakigae" for short. It is a method of creating a new work by using the characters and main scenes of popular and repeatedly performed Kabuki or Bunraku puppet theatre works as they are. Rather than creating a completely new work, the method of creating a new work by rewriting a well-known work from the past was not only used in the performing arts, but also in the field of literature during the Edo period. In particular, in the case of Kabuki, it was prohibited to perform a straightforward adaptation of a tabloid-like incident from the streets, so when creating a work with such content, it was necessary to use well-known character names and make it look like an old work on the surface. However, the method of creating a new work by inventing a "story" while using a so-called "world" is quite common, and not all of them are called kakigae kyogen. It is limited to works of domestic or domestic dramas in which a specific work is completely rewritten while making the audience aware of it. Works such as "Chushingura," "The Diary of the Two Butterflies' Quarters," "Natsumatsuri Naniwa Kagami," and "Godairiki" have given rise to many rewritten versions of Kyogen.
