Treaty of Tordesillas

Treaty of Tordesillas
A treaty signed in Tordesillas, Spain in 1494 between Spain and Portugal. It divided the spheres of influence of the two countries to avoid territorial disputes overseas. The border was a meridian (near 45° west longitude) that passed 370 leagues (1 league is about 5.6 km) west of the Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, and the eastern side was Portugal's new territory, while the western side was Spain's new territory. As a result, Portugal expanded into Brazil and the eastern parts of Africa and Asia, while Spain expanded into the Americas. However, the border in the eastern hemisphere was uncertain, and later a dispute arose between the two countries over the ownership of the Maluku Islands. Therefore, the Treaty of Zaragoza was signed in 1529, and the border was set as a meridian (near 144° 30' east longitude) that passed 297.5 leagues east of the Maluku Islands.
