A painting term combining the two Italian words "chiaro" (light) and "oscuro" (dark). The 17th-century art historian Baldinucci (1624-96) used the term to mean paintings that expressed light and dark effects using only a single color. Therefore, the term originally referred to paintings that were created using only the tones of light and dark before coloring in the oil painting process, or to washes with light and dark expressions that were finished in a single color. However, it eventually came to mean the chiaroscuro technique itself, an important component of painting. The woodblock printing technique of imitating and reproducing chiaroscuro washes was invented in Italy in the early 16th century and became widely used, and this type of woodblock printing technique or work is called chiaroscuro prints.
