Nakadori Island

Japanese: 中通島 - なかどおりじま
Nakadori Island

An island in the northern part of the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. It belongs to Shinkamigoto Town, Minamimatsuura District. Its ancient name was Ochika, and in the Middle Ages it was also called Urabejima. Its area is 168.34 square kilometers (2005). It is a cross-shaped island made up of four peninsulas, and in 1981 (Showa 56), Kamigoto Airport was built on the northeastern tip of the island, on the bridged Kashiragashima Island, but it was closed in 2006 (Heisei 18). Jetfoils and ferries run from Narao Port on the island to Nagasaki Port, and ferries run between Tainoura Port and Nagasaki Port, Arikawa Port and Sasebo Port, and Aokata Port and Hakata Port. In Arikawa Bay in the northeast, fixed-net fishing for yellowtail is popular, and there are the ports of Arikawa and Enokizu. Aokata Port in the northwest has long been a good port, a refuge port, and is home to the National Offshore Petroleum Stockpile Base. Narao Port in the southeast is a base for hauling net fishing, with fishermen setting out to the East China Sea, off the coast of San'in, and off the coast of Sanriku. The west side of the island is a scenic spot overlooking Wakamatsu Strait, with magnificent views from Mt. Sanno (439 meters), and is the center of Saikai National Park. There are many Catholic settlements with churches throughout the island, including Aosagaura Cathedral and Kashirajima Cathedral (both designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan). The 600-year-old ako tree at Narao Shrine is a national natural monument. The population is 21,568 (2009).
