Escape Movie

...By being designated an important industry, Hollywood filmmakers were given the privilege of being exempt from conscription and other obligations, but the Actors' Union first announced that they would give up these privileges, and many filmmakers actively enlisted in the military. Stars participated in camp shows to boost morale and wartime entertainment activities, participated in raising war bonds and various funds and donations, and further cooperated with the war effort by producing films to boost morale and "escape movies." After the war, Hollywood regained its former prosperity with the return of stars and directors, and in 1946 it produced 425 films, the best year in its history.
