A hat made of soft felt, it is called a fedora because it is worn with a depression in the center of the top of the hat. Felt hats with a hard finish are called bowler hats, while those with a soft finish are called fedoras or soft hats. The most luxurious fedora is the Homburg, named after the place in Germany where it is made, and it became popular in the late 19th century when Edward VII of England wore one while he was still Prince of Wales.
