…Although he suffered from epilepsy and asthma, he continued to travel from the Mediterranean region to India, energetically producing landscape paintings and travel writings, and ended his life as a single man in Italy. He became more famous for his four books of nonsense poetry, from “Nonsense Picture Book” (published anonymously in Derry down Derry in 1846) to “Funny Lyric Poems” (1877), than for his main profession of painting. In particular, the five-line humorous poem form called limerick became widespread throughout the English-speaking world thanks to him. His other works, such as “The Owl and the Kitten”, “Yongi Bongi Bo”, “Nonsense Botanical Guide”, and nonsense fairy tales, are a major source of nourishment for British humor, along with “Mother Goose” and the works of L.
