A percussion instrument in Southeast Asia. The word originates from Sanskrit and means "bronze" in Malay, and by extension it has come to refer to metallic percussion instruments made from bronze. Its usage varies by region. In Java, it is used synonymously with the ensemble known as gamelan, which mainly consists of metallic percussion instruments, and the instruments themselves, or it is an abbreviation of gambang gangsa (metallic gambang, a type of metallophone). In Bali, it is used synonymously with the percussion ensemble gamelan gong, or it refers to instruments in which various bronze or brass keys are struck with a hammer. In the mountainous areas of the northern Philippines, it refers to a flat iron gong without a hump, which is usually played by several people in an ensemble, hitting it with a stick or bare hands. This type of gong is also found in the mountainous areas of the Indochina Peninsula. [Akiko Kawaguchi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
