Tran Hung Dao

A Vietnamese national hero who defeated the invading Yuan army in the 13th century. His real name was Tran Quoc Tuan (黑國廻), but he is more commonly known by this name because he was King of Xing Dao. Born into a family of the imperial court, he was famous for his extensive reading of books from an early age. During the first Mongol invasion in 1257, he defended the northern border and made a great contribution. During the second invasion by the Yuan army in 1283, he was appointed as the commander-in-chief of the Vietnamese army as a duke. In 1285, he retreated to Thanh Hoa in central Vietnam when the Yuan army invaded Hanoi, but after harassing the Yuan army with a strategy of clearing fields (a strategy of demolishing houses and other structures so that the enemy could not use them), he defeated them at Van Kiep and drove them out of Vietnam's borders.

13世紀，元軍の侵攻を打ち破ったベトナムの民族英雄。本名はチャン･クオック･トゥアン(陳国峻)であるが，興道王であったことからこの名が一般的。宗室の一族に生まれ，幼時から群書を博覧して著名であった。1257年モンゴル軍の第1回侵入に際しては北辺を守って大功をたて，83年，元軍の第2回侵攻に際して，国公としてベトナム軍の総指揮官に任じられた。85年，一時はハノイに侵入した元軍のために，中部ベトナムのタインホアにまで退却したが，清野策(敵が利用できぬよう家屋などを取り払う作戦)をもって元軍を苦しめた後，バンキエップ(万劫)で大破してベトナム境外に駆逐した。
