Japanese: ベッコウバチ(鼈甲蜂) - ベッコウバチ（英語表記）pomplid wasp

A general term for insects in the superfamily Pomploidea of the order Hymenoptera. Body length 7-30 mm. All species, except for a few parasitic species, are hunting wasps that hunt spiders and raise their larvae in a chamber. Some species use tree hollows, gaps in stone walls, small cavities and holes on the ground as nests, while others dig pits in the ground. Species of the genus Auplopus are exceptions among wasps, and they build beer barrel-shaped containers out of mud, or create chambers in bamboo tubes separated by mud.

膜翅目ベッコウバチ上科Pomploideaの昆虫の総称。体長7～30mm。若干の寄生性のものを除いていずれの種も，クモを狩って房室に蓄え，幼虫を育てるカリバチ(狩蜂)である。巣としては，木の洞，石垣の隙間，地表の小さな空洞や穴などを利用するものや，土中にみずから坑を掘る種類などがある。ヒメベッコウバチ属Auplopusの種だけは，ベッコウバチとしては例外で，泥でビール樽形の容器をつくったり，竹筒に泥で仕切った房室を設ける。
