A city in eastern Aomori Prefecture. It was incorporated as Sanbongi City in 1955, and renamed the following year. It stretches to Mount Hakkoda in the northwest and Lake Towada in the southwest. Sanbongi, the central town, is the central city of Sanbongihara, and developed after Nitobe Den developed it. The city is neatly laid out, and the Kanchogaido Street (Koma Kaido) in particular has been selected as one of the "100 Best Roads in Japan" and "100 New Scenes of Japan," and is loved by locals. It is the center of the surrounding agricultural area, and is famous for its Chinese yam and garlic. It has long been a place for horse breeding, but recently dairy farming has become popular. It is home to the Oirase Gorge and hot springs, and is also the base for Towada tourism. In January 2005, Towadako Town in Kamikita District was incorporated. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 725.65 ^km2 . 66,110 people (2010).

青森県東部の市。1955年市制，三本木市となり，翌年改称。北西は八甲田山，南西は十和田湖に及ぶ。中心市街の三本木は三本木原の中心都市で，新渡戸伝が開拓してから発達。市街が整然と区画され，なかでも官庁街通り（駒街道）は〈日本の道百選〉〈新日本百景〉に選ばれ，市民に親しまれている。付近農村地帯の中心地で，長芋とにんにくを特産。古くから馬の飼育が盛んな所であったが，最近は酪農が盛んとなった。奥入瀬渓流や点在する温泉があり，十和田観光の基地でもある。2005年１月上北郡十和田湖町を編入。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。725.65km²。６万6110人（2010）。
