In the period from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, about 4,500 enclosures were formed, covering an area of nearly 2.55 million hectares, in less than 100 years. In this way, British capitalist agriculture, characterized by a three-class structure (the so-called tripartite division) of large landowners, large capitalist managers, and agricultural workers, was established, and at the same time many rural people became urban workers.
