However, in 1973, RF Bishop and others in Australia discovered a virus called rotavirus in the intestinal epithelial cells of infantile diarrhea, and in Japan, rotavirus was confirmed in a high rate of patients clinically diagnosed with pseudocholera infantum, and pseudocholera infantum came to be considered to be infantile gastroenteritis caused by rotavirus infection. The mechanism by which stool turns white has not been fully elucidated, but it is thought that rotavirus infection occurs most strongly in the duodenum and upper jejunum, which causes biliary dyskinesia, which inhibits the excretion of bile, causing the stool to turn white temporarily. ...

…上部小腸内に腸球菌が異常に増殖するための発酵性下痢であるとする腸球菌説，過敏性体質，年齢，食事，腸内菌叢の変動などの要因によって準備状態にあるところに寒冷刺激がストレス源となり下痢が起こるという体質説，特定の，あるいは非特定のウイルスの腸管内感染によるものとするウイルス説などである。しかし1973年，オーストラリアのビショップR.F.Bishopらが乳児下痢症の腸管上皮細胞内にロタウイルスとよばれるウイルスを発見し，日本でも臨床的に仮性小児コレラと診断された患者から高率にロタウイルスが確認され，仮性小児コレラはロタウイルス感染による乳児の胃腸炎であるとされるようになった。便が白くなる機序については完全に解明されてはいないが，ロタウイルスの感染が十二指腸や空腸上部に最も強く起こることから，その影響で胆道ジスキネジーが起こって胆汁の排出が妨げられ，一過性に便が白くなるものと考えられている。…
