Dutch historian. Born in Rotterdam. Studied cultural history under Huizinga at Leiden University, and from 1939 taught general history and Dutch history as a professor at the University of Amsterdam, and from 1959 taught historical theory. Strongly influenced by the Russian Revolution, he was attracted to Marxism and the international communist movement, and joined the Dutch Communist Party, working as an editor for the party's journal, Tribune. After obtaining his degree in 1924, he published with his wife Annie The Lowlands by the Sea (1934) and The Men Who Built Our Culture in four volumes (1938-40), which gained a wide readership.

オランダの歴史家。ロッテルダム生れ。ライデン大学でホイジンガに文化史を学び，1939年からアムステルダム大学教授として一般史，オランダ史，59年以降歴史理論を講じた。ロシア革命の強い影響のもとにマルクス主義，国際共産主義運動にひきつけられ，オランダ共産党に入党して党機関誌《トリビューン》の編集に従事した。24年学位を得てのち，妻アニーと共著で《海辺の低地》(1934)，《わが国の文化を築いた人びと》4巻(1938‐40)を公刊し多くの読者を得た。
