This assertion states that the Japanese and Korean peoples share the same ancestors, are like brothers, or a relationship similar to that of a main family and a branch family, and should essentially be one. It was touted to explain that Japan's invasion and rule of Korea was historically legitimate. The framework of the theory of Japanese and Korean common ancestry was formed a long time ago, and can be traced back at least to Japanese classical literature in the mid-Edo period. Hirata Atsutane and others' research into the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki in Japanese classical literature argued that the Japanese and Korean peoples had been in close contact since the stage of nation-building, and that a hierarchical relationship had been established between Japan and Korea in which Japan was placed in a dominant position, thus forming the framework for the theory of Japanese and Korean common ancestry.
