[Died] May 12, 1994. Massachusetts. Born in Germany and moved to the United States, Freudian psychoanalyst. His theories of stages of human development (→ Moratorium ) and ego-identity (→ Ego ) have had a wide influence on sociology, anthropology, psychology, and even literary theory. His major works include Childhood and Society (1950), Young Man Luther (58), and Identity (68).
