Shinadama
〘Noun〙① Acrobatic tricks performed in Sarugaku and Dengaku. They involve throwing many balls, swords, spears, etc. into the air and skillfully catching them. By extension, it generally refers to magic tricks and illusions. [Shin Sarugaku-ki (around 1061-65)] *Kana-zoshi, Ukiyo-monogatari (around 1665) 2 "Taking the shinata-dama (ball) and hitting the temari (ball) - all this is training." ② To skillfully deceive people's eyes. *Sakehon, Seirou Hiru no Sekai Kin no Ura (1791) "The playboy who was hidden in the cupboard is brought out, and finally he uses the shinata-dama and enters the byaubu." [Etymology] (1) Acrobatic tricks that were introduced from the continent as one of the miscellaneous arts of Sangaku, along with temari ( ball) and ryugo (ring drum) .
(2) In the early modern period, there were situations where masters of shinatama performed in permanent tent buildings in places like Dotonbori and gained a reputation. (Sui, Ichi-ichi Zuihitsu - Tama no Jō ga Shinatama no Koto) The magical aspect of the show was emphasized, and "to take shinatama" came to mean "to perform magic tricks."
