Auscultation

Japanese: 聴診 - ちょうしん（英語表記）auscultation

A diagnostic method that uses a stethoscope to listen to vibrations that occur naturally inside the body from outside the body. In the past, the stethoscope was used to listen directly to the ear. There are monoaural (Traube type) and binaural types of stethoscopes, but the binaural type is more commonly used. Auscultation of respiratory, cardiac, and vascular sounds remains an indispensable means of diagnosing illnesses.

体内で自然に生じる振動を，体外から聴診器を用いて耳で聞いて診断する方法。古くは直接耳を当てて聞く方法が行われた。聴診器には単耳型 (トラウベ型) と双耳型とがあるが，一般には双耳型が用いられている。呼吸音，心音，脈管音などの聴診は，今なお病気の診断に欠かせない手段である。
