...In modern séances, in addition to the medium, devices such as magic lanterns and jack-o-lanterns may be used as auxiliary means. In a séance held by JG Schrepfer, a member of the Leipzig branch of the Golden Rosicrucian Order in the late 18th century, ancient heroes and former kings appeared in the darkness and spoke, but this turned out to be a hoax using magic lanterns and ventriloquism. In recent years, a series of mediumistic experiments conducted by Dr. Schrenk-Notching from 1922 onwards, who was the model for T. Mann's novel Mario and the Magician (1930), is well known.
