There are Magariya (Iwate, Ibaraki, Chiba) or Chumon-zukuri (Akita, Yamagata, Fukushima, Niigata) which is L-shaped on the ground and has a hipped or gabled roof, Gassho-zukuri (Gokayama in Toyama, Shogawa area in Gifu) which has a steeply sloping gabled roof with a high ridge, Kabuto-zukuri (Yamagata, Fukushima, Western Tokyo, Yamanashi) which has a hipped roof with a thatched roof and the eaves on the gable side are raised, Honmune-zukuri (Nagano) which has a gently sloping gabled roof with a planar square shape and board roof, and Kudo-zukuri (Saga) which has a hipped roof with a U-shaped ridge. In addition, the roofs of shrines that have a complex shape with many decorative gables and gables are sometimes called Yatsumune-zukuri. …

…民家では，地方によって屋根の形が異なり，呼び方も違う。平面L字形で寄棟造や入母屋造の茅葺きとした曲屋（まがりや）(岩手，茨城，千葉)あるいは中門造(秋田，山形，福島，新潟)，こう配が強く棟の高い切妻造茅葺きとした合掌造(富山の五箇山，岐阜の庄川地方)，寄棟造茅葺きの妻側の軒を切り上げたかぶと造(山形，福島，東京西部，山梨)，平面正方形に近くこう配の緩い切妻造板葺きの本棟造(長野)，寄棟造茅葺きの棟がコの字形となるくど造(佐賀)がある。なお神社の権現造や，民家で多くの飾り破風などをつけて複雑な形となった屋根を八ッ棟造と呼ぶこともある。…
