…Ukamuse was the most widely known restaurant in Osaka, and there were restaurants with the same name in Kyoto and Edo. As described in Naniwa Hyakujidan, “Ukamuse banquets are the oldest, and although they have declined until recently, they were located north of Shin-Kiyomizu-dera…” Ukamuse was a restaurant located in a scenic spot on the Kamimachi Plateau west of Shitennoji, and was famous for its many large and unusual cups, such as the “Ukamuse” cup, which was made by blocking the hole in an abalone shell and holds 7.5 go of sake. Asahi Bunzaemon (1673-1718), a samurai of the Owari clan and author of Oumuro Chuki, had a drink at Ukamuse one night during a business trip to Osaka in 1712 (Shotoku 2), and then had a “Ikuse” cup (holding 1.7 go).
