An insect belonging to the order Plecoptera and the family Towada-Kawageridae in the class Insecta. It is one of the groups with the most primitive characteristics among the stoneflies found in the Northern Hemisphere. It is found from the Chubu region of Honshu northwards, Hokkaido and the Korean Peninsula. It is about 20 to 25 millimeters long and has a shiny brown body color. Its body is cylindrical, with a wide pronotum and protruding anterior and posterior corners. It has no wings and no ocelli on its head. Its habitat is among damp fallen leaves near the banks of rivers where the larvae live. The larvae resemble the adults, but can be easily distinguished from the adults because they have a ring of filamentous gills at the end of their abdomen, specifically between the ninth and tenth abdominal segments. The larvae live in cold streams with a water temperature of around 10°C, and emerge in the fall. A similar species, S. prolifera, is found in the mountainous areas on the border between Ibaraki and Fukushima prefectures, and on Sado Island.
