A city in southern Gunma Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the southeastern foot of Mt. Myogi and the Kabura River basin, a tributary of the Tone River. The central city, which is served by the Joshin Electric Railway, developed on the river terraces of the Kabura River. In the early modern period, it flourished as a post town and market town on the Nakasendo side road. In 1872, Japan's first government-run Tomioka Silk Mill was established, and the city became an industrial silk-reeling city. In 2014, the Tomioka Silk Mill was registered as a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage). Since the 1960s, industrial complexes have been developed, and industries such as electrical equipment, transportation equipment, and food are being produced. In 1993, the Fujioka-Sakuma section of the Joshinetsu Expressway was opened, and the Tomioka Interchange was built, and future development is expected. In rural areas, poultry farming, konjac cultivation, and greenhouse horticulture such as cucumbers and flowers are thriving. Nukisaki Shrine and Myogi Shrine are located here. In March 2006, Myogi Town, Kanra District, was incorporated. Area: 122.85 km2 . Population: 52,070 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
